Responsiblities
Student ResponsibilitiesOne of the greatest aspects of being part of a music program is that it is FUN! Being part of a musical ensemble is only fun when everyone is working together and taking responsibility for their own knowledge, skills and attitude. The ensemble will only be as good as it’s weakest player! This is why I place such a high degree of integrity and respect in the students and myself. I expect every student to strive for his or her individual excellence and continue to improve as a musician and as a positive member of our group!
Rehearsals and lessons are a very important part of the educational success of each student. The music program depends on rehearsals like a sports team needs practices. All the team players must work together, know the plays, and strengthen their personal skills in order to achieve a positive result. Black River Middle School expects the students to be at the assigned rehearsals unless prior approval has been arranged. If a student does not fulfill these responsibilities, it may mean that they will be unable to perform in the concert. I have designed the entire program to help guide each student towards success. Lessons, rehearsals, the Level System, and homework are all woven together for the benefit of the student's musical education. Please do your part by practicing and asking questions if you become confused or frustrated. |
Parent ResponsibilitiesSupport and Communication
Any great organization is fueled by the creative and corporative energy from many people. Our school and music department is no different! With the students, parents, teachers and administration working towards the same vision, our ideas and dreams will soar. Dr. Piascik welcomes your input, ideas and any support you can offer for our students. Black River’s Instrumental Program belongs to the students. Let’s all give them the tools, resources and guidance to achieve their highest abilities. Support Practicing In order for anyone to be successful playing a musical instrument, practice is essential. I need your cooperation in this matter. Every week your child should be practicing with set goals. “SmartMusic” will help them have more fun and work toward performing with more details and confidence. I expect everyone to try to practice at least 60 minutes a week. That should be two days at 30 minutes each. This is less than what is recommended; however I realize we all have busy schedules. There will be no benefit if your child tries to practice the entire 60 minutes in one day, and does not practice the rest of the week. One of the purposes of practicing is to develop the muscles needed to play a musical instrument. Only through daily practice will those muscles become strong enough to sustain a good sound on the instrument and maintain a steady rhythm. With your help your child will succeed! |
How can I H.E.L.P. my child practice more effectively?
1. Help to set-up the best possible practice facility.
a. Well-lit and free from distractions. b. A music stand, straight chair, CD player, computer. 2. Establish a regular time and routine for practice sessions. a. Students should begin with a warm-up, and then move into the week’s assignment. b. Trouble-some parts should be isolated and worked out before the entire song is repeated. c. Students should end the practice session with something fun! 3. Listen enthusiastically to your child’s practicing. a. Recognize his or her efforts with a comment such as, “I really liked the sound of the low notes on that piece.” b. You are the audience your child will most appreciate! 4. Participate in our three-way partnership: parent(s)/guardian(s), student, and teacher working together to make band an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. |
