Check out this video. Great demo of how we all understand music, no matter what our experience is. We are hard wired for music! Everyday is an adventure when you teach. Some days are fun, some are awful, some are challenging, some are inspiring, some are depressing and some are questioning the deepest part of your existence. But some...are just GREAT! Let me give some examples of why this week was so wonderful:
1: Monday: MLK Day (Yes, we had school). I started 6th grade band with a talk and video about MLK and the great leaders we have had in our world. That our "Dream" must go on in all of us, forever. The students really listened and I felt that our world is in good hands. 2: Tuesday: I heard my Trumpet and French Horn students play their regions solos. Wow! I am so impressed. It is such an honor for me to know that I have been a part of their education. 3: Wednesday: Two more students go up a "Level." I always love reading their essays and hearing them perform their instruments even better than last week. 4: Thursday: 7/8 grade band impressed me! We sightread a new piece and it sounded like, well...the piece. They played not only the half notes and quarter in the correct place, but also the pitches, articulations and accidentals. They sounded like a mature 7/8 grade band. I was happy the rest of the day. Was it perfect? No, but very inspirational. 5: Friday: My daughter was sick and I had to leave early. The students all were so concerned about her and even adjusted their schedules so we no one missed a lesson. My students have so much character and such caring souls. I am so lucky to spend my days with such great people. We laugh, have fun, respect each other, learn about life's up and downs and...oh yah...we enhance our academic skills through the power of music. Cheers to a GREAT Week - Thank you! Besides the fact that I had to fight off a nasty cold on Thursday, this has been a wonderful week. Rehearsals and lessons were productive and fun. We had so much fun playing music, learning about life and laughing. One of my highlights of the week was reading Gramcracker's (6th Grade) essay for her level test. I feel she writes straight from the heart. Enjoy! "Why I Love Music" by: Gramcracker "Music is a way to open up the world and express yourself. I love music because when I am playing music, there are no limitations of what I can do and play. One of the greatest things about music is that it doesn’t matter if you just started playing music or if you’re a professional, music will always stay in your life and keep you thinking. When you are playing music or reading music all of the rest of the world is gone. You are all alone in a happy place where nothing else matters. Exploring the world of notes, rhythms, and everything beyond is the best thing that ever happened to me. One thing that I especially love about music is that music is FREE!!!! In fact, it's more free than you can imagine! Anything can be music. From the doorbell to a rhythm that you made up, it is all music. It does not have to be from instruments or written on paper. Your imagination is the key to finding music wherever you look. When I am sad or just need to relax, all I need to do is pick up an instrument and the music will come naturally. You can create music, and if you make a mistake, it's no big deal. Music lets you learn and makes you smarter; you also get a better understanding of the arts. I love music because there is amazing music for just about any taste. There is Jazz, Classical, Pop, Rock, and many more types. There are all sorts of music you can play. There are short pieces of music, and there are long pieces that you think will never end. There are fast pieces, slow pieces, ones with long notes, and ones with short notes. Each piece of music is one of a kind and has its own mood. Music can affect the way you feel. The last thing that I love about music is that you can’t get enough knowledge about it. There is an everlasting line of things to learn when it comes to music. There is the history of music, the instruments used throughout the ages, the composers of beautiful pieces of classical music, and operas. There are also singers and writers. Even if you are a professional, there is so much more you can learn. After all, music is amazing. I love it because music is free, it's fun, and it's not a fuss. There is music for everyone, and you can keep learning about music and its history. Music is great and enjoyable in every way, and that’s the reason why I love it so much." |
