Not only did my students perform at the highest level, but my teacher, mentor, and friend attended the concert!
I direct the New Jersey Youth Symphony's Percussoin Ensemble. An ensemble of 25 of the greatest 7-12 grade percussionists in New Jersey and boy did they show off their talents last night!
They performed Equal Fire, Canaries, Japanese Impressions, Take That, Ghosts (the composer was in attendance), Crescendo, Afta-Stuba, and the great Ionisation! What a powerful and challenging program.
Another highlight was that I presented my Distinguished Educator Award to my teacher, Raymond Des Roches (pictured above). I can not begin to tell you how proud I was to have him at the concert listening to my students. Ray is an amazing person and mentor. He taught me about life, music, people and dedication. I owe everything to this man who taught me the power and beauty of percussion music! His drive, passion and commitment to music is inspiring and I can only hope that I can carry the torch for generations to come.
Thank you Ray!
